Bergama (PERGAMON)
once a great center of culture survives as
one of Turkey’s finest archaeological sites.
In the Acropolis, on a hill above the modern
town, are the remains of the celebrated
library, a steep and impressive theatre, the
temples of Trojan and Dionysus, and the
monumental altar of Zeus, the Demeter a
gymnasium laid out on three terraces and the
Agora. In town, is the site of a temple
dedicated to Serapis, becoming one of the
Seven Churches of the Apocalypse and
subsequently converted by the Byzantines
into a basilica. The Asclepion located to
the southwest of the lover city, was a
sanctuary dedicated to the god of health,
Asclepois. |

Upon arrival in
the ancient city of Pergamon, the tour begins at
the rather impressive remains of the Acropolis
which was once the cultural center of the
Hellenistic Period. Just some of the highlights
on view include the Library that once held 200
000 books, the steepest theater in Anatolia -
Hieron, remarkable piece of engineering, Temples
of Trajan and Dionysos, the Temple of Athena,
the Altar of Zeus, the Sanctuary of Demeter, the
terraced Gymnasium and the Agora.
Acropolis also played an important role during
the beginning of Christianity in the Roman
Period, and one of the Seven Churches of the
Revelations is located here: Red Basilica,
originally a temple of Serapis and later
concerted to a church by the Byzantines.
Following a lunch break, visit the
Archaeological and the Ethnographical Museums,
before driving up to the Asclepion on the
hilltop. This was an important medical center
where people received medical treatments such as
massages, mud baths, drinking of the sacred
waters and the use of herbs and ointments,
physical therapy, psychotherapy, diet. Diagnosis
was often by dream analysis.
Asclepion was home of Galen, one of the most
important physicians in the history of Medicine,
he lived here in the 2nd century BC. He was
specialist in anatomy, human dissection and
internal medicine and some of his great 16
volume medical treatise have survived to these
times.
First parchment paper made of leather was
invented in Pergamon.
